My Ox Is Broken

Ox Notes: May 28, 2009

ABC has the cure for Dancing with the Stars fans already experiencing Tom Bergeron withdrawal. The DwtS host will emcee tonight's primetime finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee at 8 ET.

American Idol contestant Danny Gokey is campaigning for a spot on Dancing with the Stars 9. I don't think it's gonna happen, Danny. The only reality show talent ABC poaches from FOX are contestants from So You Think You Can Dance.

TV Guide recapped last night's episode of SYTYCD.

Tonight at 8 ET, CNBC will air a special on the vast influence of Oprah Winfrey called The Oprah Effect. The Chicago Tribune's Maureen Ryan reviewed the special, which deals with the hidden dangers of Oprah's public approval.

TLC announced that Jon & Kate Plus 8 isn't going away anytime soon. The current season is 40 episodes long, and nearly 10 million people watched Monday's season premiere.

EW has the scoop on the new season of Project Runway.

This interview with Linda Bloodworth-Thomason, the creator of Designing Women, is pretty interesting for what she reveals about how the TV industry has changed since the 1980s.

Variety has an article about how the current recession has shaped the fall 2009 TV season.

Last night marked the return of my beloved Wipeout. An intrepid MSN reporter ran the course for a piece she wrote about the show. She didn't bite it quite as bad as this guy did in the premiere:

Danny Gokey is cute, talented, and is still working the bereaved angle. I think he'd be a good candidate for DWTS. Pair him with Cheryl.

I don't know why I find this so funny, Amy, but I love the phrase "still working the bereaved angle."

Oh, but it isn't so!
ABC poached Melissa from The Bachelor, which although twisted, is still a reality show.

OH...I see now! From Fox!
I apologize!

I think I like that line too, Kathy. :)

No prob, Carol. On a related note, I'm still not sure why DwtS loves poaching from E! reality shows so much.

At least Melissa was a last minute replacement...
Can't they let an Idol contestant become a "star" at least? Maybe Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood could pull it off, but not a 3rd place finisher who won't even have an album to promote by time the next DWTS stars. No thank you. I mean D list is bad enough, do we have to define a new category below that?

Kathy, I think maybe we need to get an internet campaign going.... Drew Lachey said this in a TV Guide interview posted today:

TVGuide.com: A lot of people loved when you temporarily co-hosted the show and want you there full-time in some capacity. Would you come back?
Lachey: If Samantha [Harris] gets pregnant again, I'll come back! I think the show works well the way it is. Two men hosting that show, it may be a little too much for people to adapt to. It works better with a man and a woman. But I do have a knowledge that not many people have on the show, and Tom [Bergeron] and I have a great rapport, so I would go back given the right opportunity.

If he's willing to, I'm willing to pledge my wholehearted support. Ahh, that was a good couple weeks...
