Dancing with the Stars 10 Cast Announcement

At last, the cast of Dancing with the Stars 10 has been revealed. Kudos to those of you who stuck with last night's Bachelor finale until the last 15 minutes of the show, when Tom Bergeron and Melissa Rycroft finally announced the names of the celebrity cast members. Here's the list:

Buzz Aldrin & Ashly Delgrosso

Pamela Anderson & Damien Whitewood

Erin Andrews & Maksim Chmerkovskiy

Shannen Doherty & Mark Ballas

Kate Gosselin & Tony Dovolani

Evan Lysacek & Anna Trebunskaya

Niecy Nash & Louis Van Amstel

Chad Ochocinco & Cheryl Burke

Jake Pavelka & Chelsie Hightower

Nicole Scherzinger & Derek Hough

Aiden Turner & Edyta Sliwinska

Overall, this is one of the strongest casts DwtS has had in years, at least in terms of name recognition. Aiden Turner is the least recognizable celeb, but he's a young, hunky English soap actor: red meat for the older, female DwtS demographic.

The two most cynical castings are Kate Gosselin and Jake Pavelka. Bachelor Jake is blatant ABC cross-promotion. Kate is currently one of the most reliable headline generators. From her perspective, DwtS is a much safer bet than trying to launch her own talk show or product line. Plus, it gives producers a chance to see her when she's not swamped by toddlers.

This is Evan Lysacek's trophy to lose, right? Olympians usually do well on DwtS -- figure skaters and gymnasts in particular -- and he won a freaking gold medal in figure skating two weeks ago! I'm not sure about Anna's freestyle choreography skills, thought, and that's the routine that ultimately decides the winner. If he was paired with Cheryl or Chelsie, I'd say victory was an absolute lock. But Evan's got enough relevant experience to make his input valuable.

As for the rest of the field, the three "sexy" couples -- Aiden & Edyta, Nicole & Derek and Erin & Maks -- could put up a fight. Then there are the wild cards like Jake & Chelsie, Ochocinco & Cheryl and Shannen & Mark who could be surprisingly entertaining.

I'm going to take Kate out of the running because she's paired with Tony, the pro partner equivalent of mirrorball kryptonite. Buzz is out because he's 80 (welcome back, Ashly!). Pam's out because she's with the new guy, Damien. And Niecy's out because she's a comedian, the profession that fares worst on DwtS. Still, I'm glad they included a funny woman this season, and I hope she sticks around a while.

Here's part one of Kate Gosselin's appearance on last night's episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live:

What do you think of the new cast?

Nicole is more of the ringer in this group than Evan. She is the lead singer of the Pussycat Dolls and has been a dancer for years. She's the Maya/Melissa/Stacy. Evan is so popular coming off of the Olympics that he is a good call to make it to the end, if not win it. This is a great opportunity for Shannen to reinvent her image, since the only thing people my age remember her as is Brenda Walsh, even though she has done other things since.

I CANNOT WAIT FOR OCHOCINCO AND CHERYL!!!!! What a great personality pairing. That alone is worth resetting the show on my DVR!

If no one knows Aiden, Edyta could become the first pro eliminated first three times.

I love that the cast is smaller. It will make for a better formula. That is, until they start announcing some absurd dances and a group krump routine.

Amy I the only one who knows who Aiden is? Hello? AMC!!! Hunk-a-hunk-a MAN! I was kinda hoping Evan was partnered with Edyta though so well... you kinda get my drift...

Aiden is not a name I knew right away. But from his pics, he is very hot! He'll get hot votes, and hopefully go the Christian route and go far.

Based on what I see, my bold prediction of first eliminated will be .... Jake Pavelka. I think Buzz will get the senior vote, and people are bitter at Jake for picking Vienna over Tenley.

Ooh, that would be good, Amy. The same Bachelor fans who embraced Melissa Rycroft could turn on Jake.

For first to go, I've got Niecy Nash. She's not as well-known as some of the other contestants.

I think Aiden's hotness will buy him enough time to make new fans. No worries, Rebecca.

As for Nicole, she's definitely the ringer this season, Amy. But I think she'll follow in the path of the other ringers you mentioned, making it to the finale but failing to win the trophy.

I wouldn't be too worried about Aiden. Many of the same people who supported Cameron Matheison are going to support him since he's from All My Children too, so I have no doubt that he will not be the first one to go home. How long he lasts is another story, but he's not going home first with the AMC fanbase.

Evan is a very hard worker, so I'm pretty much sold that he's a ringer this season. Nicole will put up a good fight, but it's so soon after Evan's gold medal, and the whole Plushenko fiasco is only going to help him.

While a lot of the names here are recognizable, I think the likeability factor is lacking, and I'm not feeling too good about this season overall. We'll see how it goes.

I truly am most interested in Ochocinco/Burke and Erin Andrews/Maksim this season. Both "stars" are the requisite "not a pro" to compete from a valid starting point, both have veteran pro's guiding them, and all four are gorgeous people. I'm doing all I can to point out that Derek's "Zinger" is the RINGIEST of ringers, and that EVAN ought to be given the trophy now or not at all. Why have a contest if the outcome is preordained?
